Here at County Care, we like to share the amazing work our staff do, but also the amazing achievements our Service Users achieve on a daily basis. For some, an achievement could be learning how to cook, getting a bus, or going to a new place.
For the next 12 days leading up to Christmas we’re going to celebrate some of these achievements and share them with you!
Third up is Kimberley.
So, on the 3rd day of Christmas, we give you….Encouragement.
It soon became apparent that Kimberley had no confidence, panicked and would not leave the shallow end when swimming.
A few months ago, service user, Kimberley wanted to go swimming as part of her Sports Wednesday, her support worker, Lucia assumed Kimberley could swim and was confident in the water.
Although Kimberley has been swimming before, she had never left the shallow end and only splashed and played around.
Lucia spent quite sometime with Kimberley and gradually she gained confidence to swim to the deep end. Kimberley progressed each time and learnt to do breaststroke in stead of doggy paddle.
Kimberley began by swimming as far as she was comfortable and each time went further and further until she was swimming to the deep end without even thinking about it.
Kimberley has now grown in confidence and her and Lucia now go swimming every Wednesday afternoon. She is at the point where she gets in a straight away without any confidence issues and is swimming lengths. Amazingly, she achieves about 16 lengths in the time frame they are there!
Kimberley bought herself a moodle and can swim lengths without encouragement or guidance from Lucia, which is fantastic!
Support worker, Lucia still swims by her side to give advice to improve and develop her swimming, ie speed and strokes.
Lucia said:”I am so proud of Kimberley and what she has achieved, how well she is doing and how confident she hsd become, especially overcoming her fear of the deep end.”
